When the Battle Comes Back

David’s victory over Goliath was decisive. The giant fell, the Philistines fled, and it appeared that Israel’s long struggle with its enemy had finally ended.

But the Philistines returned.

First Samuel records several occasions when David faced the same enemy again. Each victory was real, but none of them meant that David would never experience another battle.

Our spiritual lives can follow a similar pattern. We may overcome a temptation, habit, fear, or struggle and believe that the battle is permanently behind us. Then, sometimes after a long season of peace, the same challenge returns.

A returning battle does not mean the previous victory was false. It means we must seek God again.

David did not assume that yesterday’s strategy would automatically bring today’s victory. He continued asking God for direction. Sometimes God told him to go immediately. At other times, God gave him a different plan.

We cannot depend solely on yesterday’s prayer, commitment, or experience. We must remain faithful, return to the altar, and renew our dependence upon God.

There may also be unresolved guilt, condemnation, attitudes, or wounds that need to be properly laid to rest. Through the blood of Jesus, we can be washed, cleansed, and freed from the things that have kept us bound.

The enemy may return, but God has not changed. If we remain willing to pray, obey, and enter the battle again, He can give us another victory.
