You Don’t Have to Repeat the Story

Sometimes we look at the patterns that have existed in our families for years and begin to assume they are simply part of who we are.

Maybe it is addiction. Maybe it is bitterness, broken relationships, anger, shame, or choices that seem to repeat themselves from one generation to the next. When something has been present for long enough, it can begin to feel inevitable.

But your history does not have to determine your future.

When God delivered the children of Israel from Egypt, He reminded them, “I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.” After generations in bondage, God did not bring them out so they could continue living as though they were still slaves. He brought them out so they could stand upright.

The same truth should encourage us today.

Just because something was a burden in the lives of those who came before us does not mean we have to carry it forward. We do not have to repeat every mistake. We do not have to continue every unhealthy pattern. We do not have to remain bound by the shame of the past.

Through the power and anointing of God, a different story can begin with us.

There may be things in our lives that have existed for years. There may even be things that have followed our families for generations. But no burden is too old and no pattern is too established for God to change.

Sometimes faith means believing that what has always been does not have to be what comes next.

You can stand upright. You can walk forward. And by the grace of God, you can leave a different story for the generation that follows you.
