Deal With It While It’s Still in the Pit

There are things in life that may not seem like problems because they are not causing us trouble right now.

In 2 Samuel 23, Benaiah encountered a lion in a pit on a snowy day. He could have walked away. The lion was contained. It was below the surface. At that moment, it posed no immediate threat.

But Benaiah recognized something important: just because something is contained today does not mean it will remain contained tomorrow.

Sometimes God brings something to our attention while it is still small. It may be an attitude, a habit, a temptation, a strained relationship, or an area of our spiritual life we have neglected. No one else may even know it is there.

The temptation is to say, “It’s not really causing a problem.”

But perhaps the fact that we can see it now is itself an opportunity from God.

We do not have to wait for a small issue to become a crisis before we address it. We can pray about it now. We can make the change now. We can seek forgiveness now. We can ask God for help now.

Sometimes victory begins by dealing with what is beneath the surface while it is still in the pit.
